Book Review: Mermaid Moon by Colleen Coble

I didn’t think it was possible for Colleen Coble to write a better, more suspenseful novel than The Inn at Oceans Edge, but somehow Mermaid Moon has topped it.  It may be my favorite Coble book ever!

Mallory Davis left her Maine hometown fifteen years ago in a cloud of shame.  She married a man she didn’t really love because he had money to provide for her.  Some bad investments followed by his death left Mallory with nearly no way to survive and take care of her teenage daughter, Haylie.  She’s finally made a sale of her handmade jewelry—enough to make her mortgage payment for the month—when she gets a phone call from her father.  She can immediately tell that something is wrong, and just before he dies he tells her to find her mother.  Mallory doesn’t understand what he could mean since her mother died fifteen years ago.  She has no choice but to return to her hometown and figure out who killed her father, and what he meant about finding her mother.  Kevin O’Connor had to build a new life for himself after Mallory left.  Now he’s raising a daughter on his own, too, and he doesn’t want to get tangled up with Mallory again.  But danger is following Mallory everywhere she goes.  Is someone trying to kill her?  Is there something in her father’s house that they don’t want her to find?  As the intrigue gets deeper and deeper, Mallory and Kevin rush to save Haylie’s life, having no idea that the threat to Mallory is closer than they guessed.

I have read a lot of books through the years, and I’ve gotten pretty good at guessing the plot.  I can usually figure out who is the guilty party before it’s revealed, but in this one I had no clue.  There were so many surprises and plot twists, that I couldn’t even come close to guessing what was going on.

I love that Ms. Coble writes non-traditional love stories, mostly about second chances and forgiveness.  This book is not a romance novel with a side of suspense, but the love story between Kevin and Mallory is a backdrop for the intrigue of this mysterious tale.

I highly recommend this book to lovers of clean, Christian suspense novels.  Colleen Coble has written another winner here with Mermaid Moon, and you don’t want to miss it!

Happy Reading!
