Book Review: No Safe Harbor by Elizabeth Ludwig

Who could have thought that even though we live hundreds of miles away from the closest ocean, we would be suffering the effects of Hurricane Sandy in southern West Virginia?  Well, we are today.  The rain came yesterday and today it is slowly changing over to a wet, heavy snow.  The worst isn't even supposed to hit until late tonight and early tomorrow.  They're calling for high winds and lots of snow, which could bring power outages.  Now I can live without lights (for a while) but I absolutely HATE to be cold.  Yesterday we went out after church and bought a kerosene heater and a can of kerosene.  Let the snow blow in!
I received my copy of No Safe Harbor this weekend from Bethany House Publishers.  I started reading it on Friday night, and stayed up late on Saturday until I finished it.  I only wish I had waited so I could have it to read during this storm!  Once I started reading, I literally could not put it down.  At first, I felt like the story would pan out pretty quickly, but Ms. Ludwig had more than one trick up her sleeve so to speak.  The plot twisted so many times, I found myself pausing to think it through and figure out exactly what was happening.  I don't know about you, but that's one of my favorite kinds of stories.  Time after time I was left wondering who was on what side, and who could or couldn't be trusted.  The web of deceit and intrigue went much deeper than I ever imagined.
No Safe Harbor (Edge of Freedom)
I never expected the book to end like it did, and I must say it was a little disappointing.  It seemed that it was wrapped up entirely too quickly, and a few conflicts seemed unresolved.  I can only hope that they will be resolved in the second book of the series.  My favorite character was by far Rourke Turner.  I loved the way that he fell in love with Cara, even protecting her in spite of himself.  Cara's character seemed a little shallow and naive, but not so much that I disliked her.  I hope that both of them will be featured in the rest of the series.
I would absolutely recommend this book to others.  I will be on the lookout for book two in the Edge of Freedom series.  I hope to enjoy it as much as I did this one.
